Reflective Roof Coatings
Why consider a reflective roof coating system?
LOWER ROOF TEMPERATURES
Highly reflective white pigments reflect up to 90% of the sun’s radiant heat, dramatically lowering the temperature of the underlying roof substrate and preventing further degradation.
LOWER INTERIOR TEMPERATURES
Since most of the sun’s radiant heat is reflected rather than absorbed into the roof substrate, interior temperatures are reduced dramatically.
Discarded roofing materials take up a tremendous amount of our ever-diminishing landfill space. Application of a protective coating system prior to failure of an existing roof prevents further degradation, ultimate tear-off and subsequent replacement expense.
REDUCED ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Preserving our precious energy resources has become a major focus of government and industry, as building codes are amended to recognize the benefits of “heat reflective” roof systems as a method of reducing energy costs and improving air quality.
REDUCED “HEAT ISLAND” EFFECT
Dark colored construction materials, combined with a reduction in vegetation, has created a phenomenon labeled “heat islands” in most of our urban metropolises, with temperatures up to 12°F higher than surrounding rural areas. Reflective roof coatings are classified as “cool construction materials”, which help to minimize the negative effects associated with heat islands.
BETTER AIR QUALITY
Because light colored roofs reflect most of the sun’s radiant energy away from the roof substrate before it is converted into heat, the surrounding air temperature is lowered. Most pollution is dependent upon photochemical reactions whose rates are temperature dependent, therefore a slight reduction in air temperature can result in a dramatic decrease in atmospheric pollution.
LOWER ELECTRICAL COSTS
Documented case studies show that a reflective white roof coating system substantially reduces air conditioning energy use, typically paying for itself within 5 years.
Roof coatings systems require very low annual maintenance. Through periodic recoating, the elastomeric coating system can be extended to last the life of the building.
Roof coatings systems are liquid-applied and 100% adhered. This means there are no seams to come apart, no fasteners to come loose, no adhesives to disbond and no ballast adding unnecessary weight.
INDEPENDENT TEST DOCUMENTATION
Numerous case studies by organizations such as the U.S. Department of Energy, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Florida Solar Energy Center, Tennessee Valley Authority and the Roof Consultants Institute have verified the advantages obtained through the use of reflective coatings systems.
